Dyson DC15 The Ball All Floors Upright Vacuum Steel Yellow

Dyson vacuum cleaners are known for their revolutionary engineering, styling, and ergonomics that help make cleaning faster and (almost) fun. A rising issue in urban living is how to effectively clean small spaces, along with furniture and all those impossible nooks and crannies that have always seemed like an obstacle course. Dyson engineers have developed an entirely new type of vacuum cleaner, with a ball instead of wheels, so it twists and turns like no other vacuum. Traditional upright vacuum cleaners can be cumbersome and inefficient in unique situations, especially in small spaces. You crash into chairs, bash into bookcases and scuff the baseboards, unaware that the machine is controlling your movement, rather than the other way around. It can be tiring, frustrating and often, due to the lack of control, you miss whole areas of your home. The Ball tackles these problems, so cleaning is more efficient. The Ball is a full-sized machine but it’s more manoeuvrable than traditional vacuum cleaners. Instead of rigid wheels it has a single ball that allows it to glide around furniture. Just by turning your wrist, you can easily steer into the most awkward nooks and crannies – under the desk, around the sofa, and behind the TV. The Dyson DC15 “The Ball” simply goes where no upright has gone before. For the particular apartment dweller, that’s truly special. Cleaning will be a ball with “The Ball”. Get one today. 1 Star Dyson Ball Disappointed
Excellent for area rugs and carpeting. Picks up small particles and dust. Easy to empty canister. Does not do a good job for bare floors. Throws around dry cat food and does not pick up. Upholstery attachment is not easy to handle and not convenient to use. Power cord is too stiff and tangle up very easily. This machine is too heavy for a compact vacuum.
5 Stars I love this vacuum!
Even though there are already a large number of favorable reviews for the DC15, I wanted to add my voice to the majority – I do love this vacuum! Being a guy, the high-tech design appeals to me, but I wouldn’t applaud if the design features didn’t actually work. Personally, I like the bagless design, and I don’t mind the small bit of disassembly required to use the hose and attached tools. I have lived with an old-fashioned Kirby in the past, and more recently, an Oreck XL. The Dyson DC15 beats the pants off of both of these vacuums in my experience. The Oreck XL was light and easy to maneuver, but ineffective on carpet. The Kirby was reasonably effective on carpet, but a bit difficult to maneuver and no good on hard floors. It was also rather messy to change bags. I had given up on the Oreck and was using my trusty shop-vac for everything, but had developed some sinus problems. So, I figured that getting a good vacuum for my carpets and a room air filter would be steps in the right direction. I did a bit of research and settled on the Dyson DC15. There are some cheaper vacuums that have gotten higher ratings from Consumer Reports, but I did not feel they were built as well as the Dyson, and I still preferred its design.
Well, I never thought I would look forward to vacuuming, but the DC15 makes this chore fun and rewarding (for me, at least). Please keep in mind that I got it mainly for use on my carpets, and it does this brilliantly. Some will find it a bit large and heavy (I find it similar to the old Kirby in this sense) but the ball design makes it easy to maneuver around furniture and swoop here and there. It has excellent power and is tenacious on the carpet – it doesn’t want to let go! It was satisfying to see all of the old crud come out and head for the trash. By the way, unlike some very sensitive allergy sufferers (who have my complete sympathy), I have found the built-in filters to be effective – I don’t feel like I am getting a lot of dust blown in my face while using it.
Emptying the dust collection tank is a snap – literally. One button detaches the tank, and another opens the door to empty. You do have to be careful with this step or you can create a cloud of dust. Just take some care and there is no problem (although I do suggest taking it to the garage or outside). The collection tank snaps apart for easy cleaning if you wish.
So, there you have it – an excellent vacuum at a reasonable price. If you are looking for something smaller, take a look at the DC24. It seems to embody most of the features in a much smaller and lighter package. A bit less power apparently, but still more than adequate for most jobs. I don’t doubt that there are a few more expensive vacuums that have an edge in some respects, but for me, the DC15 fills the bill in top form. Highly recommended.
5 Stars FINALLY! A vacuum that really works…..great!
We have had a number of upright vacuums in the $100 range that do not last. So frustrating. SO, I took the plunge and bought the Dyson DC 15 after reading reviews. I purchased a reconditioned Dyson and a 3 year warranty.
Free shipping! It arrived and I opened the box and EASILY put it together. I LOVE this machine! Besides the great suction, it is bagless and so easy to empty. An excellent feature. Picks up great on carpeting or bare floors and just a press of the button to switch from one to the other. Yes, it is a bit heavy, but I can get it up the stairs. I am so glad that we invested in this Dyson and would recommend it to all.
5 Stars Check this one out
I had read so many positive things about Dyson vacuums and debated so long about purchasing one, I decided to give it a try. I am glad I did. The Dyson DC15 Ball VAC is a full size upright vacuum. With an array of features and cleaning attachments, it is designed to be a mainstay of cleaning in your home. The DC15 with its flashy yellow and silver colors steadfastly baked in, along with a futuristic appearance screams, “Here I am.” Indeed, with lightweight polycarbonate plastics, revolutionary ball design, Root Cyclone technology, does make a statement. (Dyson)
The DC15 is designed to be simple to use effectively. This is where the vacuum excels. With a 37 foot power cord you find yourself plugging in much less. The telescoping cleaning rod is built right in to the handle. You just pull it up and out of the handle then push the release button to use this 12 foot extension. This is a great feature I use all the time. I actually look on the walls, lights and fans for a reason to use it. All attachments are handily clipped, within easy reach, in to preformed areas atop the canister.
When you use it on bare floors, you have the option to turn of the brush. This is also great for not shooting debris all over the house, when you are trying to vacuum them up. The brush uses a direct drive not a belt, so when you have the vacuum in an upright position the brush is not engaged and not spinning. A nice feature so you don’t trash your carpet or floor when you are stationary using attachments, I would think this would help in the life of the brush also. The motor is placed inside the ball of the unit, shifting the center of gravity, allowing for a low profile, for greater reach under furniture.
Clear dirt containment compartments and HEPA filters have become standard equipment in today’s modern vacuums but not many are so cleverly designed. The Dyson uses a simple quick release button placed on the handle to release the bottom of the dirt bin right in to the trash, to minimize contact with dirt. It even comes apart further for periodic easy cleaning of the inside.
“Dyson vacuums work differently.” (Dyson) Root Cyclone technology spins the air in the vacuum at high speeds keeping dirt in the bin from interfering with suction. The ball design makes it easy to maneuver around objects on the floor. So easy, my seven year old begs to vacuum. It’s built in washable HEPA filter is certified asthma & allergy friendly, (Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America) helps defray the cost of ownership.
The cleaning power of the Dyson DC15 is where it really shines. I can tell you I have owned many vacuums form a cheap $50 unit, to my deluxe Dirt Devil Vision. Trust me when I say, you have no idea how dirty your carpet is until you use this vacuum. I performed the test most of us have seen. I vacuumed my large area rug in my living room with my old Hoover. I looked pretty good, so I fired up the DC15 and started vacuuming. It was unbelievable. I could see the carpet getting cleaner. I was so mystified; I brought in the rest of the family to verify what I was seeing. We all concurred, the carpet looked brighter. Here is a link to a photo I took at that point. I was so impressed I posted this at Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B000J2O4BK/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_0?ie=UTF8&index=0
So what are the cons? Some may say price, but in comparison of the high end units from; Kirby, Oreck and even Hoover that is a non issue. If you want a cheap vacuum, go to Wal-Mart. It is mostly plastic, but so are many others. The Dyson does not try to hide that, in fact they highlight the materials used and their durability. Some people talk about weight. (Amazon) At nearly twenty pounds, it has heft, but because of maneuverability you hardly notice. I noticed the design has relatively complex movements, at least as vacuums go, so I don’t know about long term durability. The high quality hose sometimes makes it a little hard to handle when it is fully extended. The foot release takes some practice to use and is even harder when bare footed, but once you realize, it is more of a down and back motion you become more proficient. The auto leveling feature is nice but, it does not transition great to a higher pile carpet. That is all I can think of on the negative side. I don’t know if this is the best vacuum on the market. Dyson makes pricier models (anything in the Animal line) but, I will say it is designed well.
With a powerful motor, precise maneuvering at the flick of your wrist, and immense cleaning power, the Dyson DC15 is a great cleaning machine. The style may be a little much for some, but for me, I want a machine the looks ready to do the job. “Though it’s expensive, many happy owners say the Dyson DC15 is worth the premium.” (Consumersearch.com). It’s worth noting, good deals can be found online at many retailers, including options for factory refurbished units found at www.amazon.com. I bought mine there for $269, including shipping. Mine was shipped to me perfect, looking and working like a brand new unit. At that price, even $399; I feel it is well worth the money.
1 Star Don’t buy the DC15 if you have mixed hardwood / carpet floors
I originally had the animal which had much more suction, but TOO MUCH. I couldn’t vacuum area rugs without actually sucking them up and causing the vacuum to shut off. I switched to the DC15 after being told by the sales person that it was basically the same thing but with the ball. They said because of the different design we shouldn’t have the problem with it sucking up carpets.
Well that was true but it also doesn’t suck up dirt effectively. The edges of the front vacuum won’t suck up anything which means it is completely ineffective against walls or furniture. I actually had to keep my old canister vacuum after purchasing this one so we could use it before or after the Dyson to clean areas where it could not. I can say it works well on large open CARPETED areas only. If you try to use on hardwood (as this model claims to be “all floor” capable) it will simply push anything larger than a small peppercorn around without vacuuming it up.
Finally, the manual cord storage is insane and completely outdated. For the money they could have built in a retractable cord unit so you don’t waste time unwinding and winding the cord by hand every time you use it.
Extremely disappointing to say the least. I will never buy a Dyson upright again for sure. Every time I use this one I feel the pain from the money I wasted on it. Don’t make the same mistake I did.
